Very rare large “Swatow” bowl from the Zhangzhou kiln, Fujian Province, China. This is a Binh Tuan shipwreck recovery piece, discovered off the coast of Vietnam in 2001. In the center is an underglaze blue lion playing with a ball and three orchid plants radiating from the center in a burnt orange and green underglaze, on the outside consists of an abstract band diamond and grass blade pattern the lower part has orange and green floral and foliate scrolls most uncommon are the two phoenixes that have blue overglazed wings. A blue overglaze is almost never encountered on these Swatow ceramics and should be considered extremely rare. This piece has been simply but extensively repaired, all the pieces are here, would be a good candidate for a professional restorer, but looks good the way it is. D: 20cm7.9in and 9cm/3.5in.
